About Us

The Corder Pounders program is a medically based program that is available for all ages (starting at 6 years of age). We work closely with pediatricians to ensure a complete preventive health approach that's improves the health and quality of life.   We believewith creative intervention of healthier lifestyles such as gardening, diet reformation, youth cooking and consistent FUN physical activity we can reverse the childhood obesity dilemma and most importantly possibly reduce the risk of PRE-MATURE TYPE II DIABETES.

The recent statistics show a serious medical crisis within the young African American population that will be an epidemic if we are not PRO-ACTIVE! NOW is the time to get your family involved because this is PREVENTABLE!

Over the past several years there has been an alarming increase in the number of pre-Diabetic children and teenagers.  Pre-Diabetes is a syndrome characterized by the development of several physiological abnormalities including obesity, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol) and insulin resistance.  This syndrome may predispose our children to develop early onset of Diabetes.

The main problem is childhood obesity, which is caused by the combined domino effects of unbalanced/unhealthy meals (at school and at home), lack of active participation in school systems, along with the lack of physical activity involvement outside of school.   All together these factors may produce young children who are most likely pre-diabetic to some extent, and at least 15 lbs over weight based on the national growth curve and the Body Mass Index Scale (BMI)  40% of African American families have a history of diabetes, which significantly increases the risk of developing diabetes (insulin resistance).  We have what it takes to cure this health epidemic!

We have affordable programs all year round for youth and families, which include the following:

Family Wellness Workshops
After School Programs
Summer Fit Camps
Healthy & Fun Birthday Parties
Family Consultation
Teen Fitness
Affordable & Convenient Personal Youth & Family Training
Healthy School Consultants

PARENTAL TESTIMONY:

Corder Pounder is awesome, I remember starting up at the rec ctr on Saturday my daughter not really to sure if she wanted to do it. She is now a senior in high school and still sticking with CP. Thank God it has helped her which in return she could help myself and her grandmother. She learned correct things to eat as well as how to cook healthy as a teen. The yrs have passed by and yes she slipped sometimes, but she gets back on track on her own and she knows how to get things back together. She was the cook last summer 20011 and already hit Addrienne up for this yr. can't keep her away. Corder pounder rocks!

ALARMING STATISTICS

Overall
, obesity among children aged 6 to 11 more than doubled in the past 20 years, jumping from 6.5% in 1980 to 17% in 2006, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The rate among adolescents aged 12 to 19 more than tripled, increasing from 5% to 17.6%.

Such alarming statistics is why Adrienne Corder; daughter of two community pediatricians, Dr. Frederick Corder and Dr. Marilyn McPherson-Corder, started the Corder Pounders’ Youth Fitness Program in 2003 as a grassroots project.    Dr. Frederick Corder has practiced for over 25 years in the community and is chairman of the local pediatric unit.  Dr. Marilyn McPherson-Corder a faculty professor at two medical schools and an adolescent and genetic specialist, she too has practiced for over 25 years.  Adrienne Corder is a medical administrator, clinical genetic researcher and an interventionist.  Ms. Corder with the guidance of her parents build thus program out of their pediatric office.  The program targets minority families with children (ages 6-18 years) who are at-risk for developing or who already exhibit symptoms of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes.  We also serve as an appropriate preventive tool for youth who may not "yet" be overweight, but can use the information to LEARN how to live and eat healthy.

The Corder Pounders Youth Fitness Program has had great success, with even parents taking part in the weekly exercise and on going educational sessions.  The adult program is led by fitness director and  Master Trainer Charles (Chuck) Taylor, he has motivated and maintained parental interest in working out with their children. Please see our comprehensive fitness approach under programs & activities. Over 40% of the participants decreased their BMI (Body Mass Index) over a six-month period, with 39% moving from obese to a more stable health status, and corresponding clinical values improvements.  Dr. Marilyn McPherson-Corder said, “This is a small investment to make now for overall quality of life and longevity for decades to come.”

Obesity is typically associated with diet, but inactivity plays an equal or even stronger role in the associated health problems,” says Adrienne Corder, who operates the Washington, D.C.-based Corder-Pounders Youth Fitness program (CPYF).  The two year program which is a family-centered intervention that promotes a healthier lifestyle among families and youth.  Washington, D.C. has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity, with recent reports as high as 40%  of our youth overweight or obese.

Due to the success and over whelming response, they have expanded the project to
include the Bowie based: Family Fitness Center.  The Center includes: 1. a youth oriented fitness program, 2. family oriented nutritional educational programs 3. a youth chess club 4. behavior modification programs, 5. genetic analysis and prevention counseling, 6. In-School Programming and 7. Day Summer Camps.

We have partnered with the P.G. County Public School System, District of Columbia Public School System and  Bowie State University.

The Corder Pounder Studio is located in the Omni Medical Building at 4000 Mitchellville Road, Suite 304 in Bowie, Maryland.

 THE CORDER POUNDER
YOUTH FITNESS PROGRAM

Started as a grassroots project in 2003, the Corder Pounder Youth Fitness program (CPYF) is a DC-based, family-focused obesity intervention that reaches into the community (through recreation/community centers, local pediatricians, churches, and schools) to promote sustainable lifestyle modifications among inner city youths. CPYF targets minority families with children (ages 6-18 years) who are at-risk for developing or who already exhibit symptoms of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and/or type 2 diabetes. Through weekly education sessions and exercise activities, families are empowered to initiate and maintain healthier lifestyles.  Participants receive baseline and then quarterly measurements of relevant biomarkers (HgbA1c, cholesterol levels (lipid profile), and fasting glucose), anthropometric parameters (BMI, body composition, waist:hip circumference ratio), and diets to monitor and determine the effectiveness of the CPYF interventions.

Approximately 40% of the participants decreased their BMI by at least 1 kg/m2 over a six-month period, with OVER 25% moving from obese to overweight classification. Most CPYF families travel 10-25 miles to attend, now the FAM FIT GYM of Bowie will be a more convenient site for residence of Prince Georges County.  Given it's recruitment and retention success, the CPYF program could serve as a working model through which the District of Columbia metropolitan area can begin to substantially decrease the rate of childhood obesity where it is currently the highest in the nation.

The goal of the program is to reduce the number of pre-diabetic children by improving their eating habits and physical activities.  We serve as a support system for those dedicated to improving the health of their family.  The clinical goals are to reduce the weight, body fat, cholesterol levels, Hgb(1)c levels, and improve their BMI’s (body mass index) over a period of 1 year.

We offer small group fitness for the youth program, small group boot camp for teens and adults, family focused fitness and  one on one personal training.  We make gym-styled personal training assessable and affordable  to those at-risk families, who may not have gym memberships.

Our age appropriate fitness model makes us an ideal program that meets the physical and nutritional needs of the entire family!  We also work very close with our participants private physicians to promote our holistic approach.
